Honest question: Why do people love fishing bass so much? I think they're small, are easy to land and walleye tastes way better.
You actually have to work for Walleyes, especially as the water warms up. Walleyes have a feeding cycle whereas Bass are mostly opportunistic feeders that like shiny, noisy, creeping things that happen by their hiding place. Bass will also protect their beds when spawning.
Hook into a smallmouth that's 5lbs+, especially using lighter weight tackle, that's quite a bit of fun. Agreed that walleye tastes better, but where I live walleye are only in a few places, none of which are close enough to be convenient. Not to mention that the rivers here that have walleye also have some serious pollution issues.
In some places, we don't have walleye or pike. In Texas, it's pretty much bass and crappie (if we're talking exclusively fresh water fishing). There are some Texas lakes in the panhandle that have walleye, but it's very few.
Also, not all bass are small and they aren't always "easy to land." I caught a 9 lb largemouth about 9 months ago. There are also stripers in bigger lakes and all of them are huge. And then there are also hybrid "wipers" (cross between a striped bass and white bass) and they are big.
The Texas Parks & Wildlife department also stocks many of our lakes and river systems with trout in the winter. This is purely for shits and giggles because they will die come spring/summer.
