Quitting sugar is amazing. It's been years since I quit sugar. I don't need sweets anymore. The taste of sugar makes me sick. I drink coffee or tea with milk instead of sugar, and this is enough. I am living like my ancestors. Highly recommend quitting sugar. You will start tasting the sweet in natural products and will never want sugar anymore.

Eh I do a LOT of manual labour and I need calories in a small form factor.

I can go through 1/2 kg of sweets, 10 choc bars, 4 sandwiches and a massive dinner and still lose weight every day.

If I had to eat that as normal food I'd be crippled every time I bent over.

An important lesson for you to keep in mind is that even if you can burn it off, it's still bad for you.

I worked construction in the heat and did nothing but eat 1-2 Tbsp chunks of straight butter, and/or nut butter and drank 2-4 liters of mostly water and a diy Gatorade made from ACV, salt, lime juice and water. I had more energy than I knew what to do with and cognitive performance was night and day better.

Consider LCHF. If you're doing it right it does take a week or two to get your body and metabolism to basically switch over but it's a better option for someone like you looking for energy and endurance.

It’s overall reducing your energy not giving it.
