The Caucasus oilfields were far away, but finally Hitler had no other choice than to give up or to try to get them - which was just suicide. Maybe there was some hope to find some oil in North Africa, or there was a plan to use Africa as a base for conquering the Middle East.

This is not correct. Germany managed to create bio fuel from vegetables.

.. and synthetic gasoline from coal. A lot of it. But it was extremely expensive, and when the enemy spotted the production facilities, the war was lost (no gasoline = no Luftwaffe).
