From the outside looking at what you have described, I'd say you have it good. You don't have a family depending on you for food, you don't have a house that you are in jeopardy of losing. If your hours are being cut, you have more time to get food. Get a fishing rod and catch yourself some free food. If you are near the coast, dig up some clams (you only need something like 5 a day to sustain yourself). Perhaps you have some community gardens nearby (usually under power lines or other "wasted" space. Get some seeds and plant yourself some food for down the road. Maybe you could work as a farm hand and stay in their guest house? You'd get to learn a valuable skill, be outdoors all day, getting exercise and you'll sleep well at night.
