It's 2am and I get woken up by my dogs barking and for a minute I didn't think anything of it as a stray dog has been wandering around for two days so they bark at it. I get an alert on my phone from my outdoor camera that stares at my truck. Now it's a 07 Chevy Avalanche, not something worth stealing to most people but a dependable truck for me. So from what I can see on the camera is some guy lurking around my back alley way with something in his hand and he goes to the truck. This guy has a cut garden hose and a gas can and has started the process of syphoning my gas. I throw open my backdoor and open fire on this asshole with a paintball gun and like every chickenshit thief he takes off running leaving his stuff behind. (I had my handgun on me in case I needed it). Today, I'm going to search for a locking gas cap.

I used a paintball gun because I didn't want to go to jail and deal with our unjust court system if I ended up killing the thief.

It has me thinking if it would be wise to stock small non lethal arms like that to detour petty criminals to save bullets for the real threats? What do you guys think?

If you shot the guy the next guy would not have to use his paintball gun.

Sadly, you did the right thing. The court system would have no problems sending you to jail for making the world a better place. The more tools in your arsenal the better lethal and nonlethal. Since you have the paintball gun it would be good to get some of those paintballs that have pepper spray in them.

The first round in my shotgun is a rubber slug. They only get one chance.

They might just drill a hole in your gas tank, it happened to my work vehicle. Gas tank is a lot more expensive than a tank of gas

Paintballs with indelible ink? So you can see who it is in the daytime... probably someone reasonably local, within a few blocks/ walking distance (with a fuel can).

Not sure of the legality, would depend on where you are. You'd also want to be accurate

Because I'e been here and done this, you CAN still be charged with a host of things, should the thief choose to do so and be able to prove it.

My only advice is if a LEO approaches you for a "talk" or with questions, stick to the "do you have a warrant" and "not without a lawyer" strategy. Fuckers will fish for any/everything to pin on you. Give them nothing and they can do nothing.

If you accidentally kill someone just get rid of the body. No body...nocrime

Remember, the first attack should prepare you for retaliation. My suggestion, get a pepper gun. If he's packing heat he'll likely miss because of the pepper in his eyes. I've heard good things about the Byrna pepper gun. Kinda pricey but you don't want junk for self-defense.

I was the scrap yard a year ago when the scrapper and I talked about a junkie stealing gas from him. He managed to shoot him in the foot as he was running away with a .44. Impressive but he should of aimed higher.
