Yoga and Pilates can be very beneficial for powerlifting , body building , martial arts , hell even football and baseball. Incorporating some yoga or pilates will also greatly help in preventing injuries.
I got myself in shape just using a free yoga/pilates app 3-5 times a week on my phone. Fitness is completely accessible and nobody has excuses anymore.

Is there any research into the improvement of flexibility offered by consistent yoga?
I'm sure there's quite a bit. Seen some over the years , but can't tell you exact studies offhand
