We have all been semi-pro for many years, but don't rely on it for income. I just don't wanna jam with stoners that fuck up simple songs. I am good enough on bass to play with guys like Herbie Hancock (yes, really).
The guitarist being stoned doesn't bother me, it's the singer that cause problems. When he is too high, he sometimes loses the count, and starts the next verse too early, throwing the whole band off. To me, this is unforgivable, and directly related to HOW high he is. A little bit is OK, but he is a hopeless addict that puts being high before everything else. But the last two rehearsals he did tone it down, which is amazing. He knows I am just about done with this stoner shit.
But then we do a fantastic 30 minutes after we all (not the drummer) got high. So...conflicted. I don't know what to think now.
Yes, I think we will try this format, but I already see it devolving into the usual routine: they will get really baked right before jamming, I will not, and then I will be pissed off. The old slippery slope thing. We shall see.
Finding the right people is always very challenging. In my area, finding a bassist to replace me would be almost impossible, and we all know it. But I am not above dropping out, and starting my own band. The thing is, our rehearsal room is in my house...very convenient. I want this project to work out, but I cannot really overstate just what gigantic potheads those two dudes are, it's very divisive. Our drummer is clean, but I don't want him to start joining in to 'fit in'. I will play it by ear, and hope for the best.
