My spouse and I never bothered to setup a joint bank account when we married and periodically write five figure checks back and forth depending on who's making large purchases that month.

If I go to one of my bank's branches in the pasty suburbs to deposit one of these checks, funds are immediately available no questions asked. If I go to one of the branches in a "diverse" neighborhood, they are up my ass about who/what/why and 3-5 business day holds to make sure it's not forged.

For things like buying cars, paying contractors, large investments, etc. Depending on which of us has been making the bulk of big ticket spending lately.
