Something is always fake about them

Something is always fake about them

Or they have a job they want and not one they got stuck doing because they've led a life of no direction?

[–] 3 pts

I lead a life of no direction. I would kill to have a dream. I never wanted to be a fire fighter or a doctor or anything like that. The question was what do you want to be when you grow up? My answer was I have no fucking clue

People can learn a skill, and start to enjoy it once they're good at it. The trick is that not everyone can do something they're not good at long enough to develop the skills they need to enjoy it. Partly it's mindset, which sounds like hokey bullshit, but the "fuck you I'm better than you" that comes with being an extremely skilled individual that everyone wants to recruit helps too.

Those who are overly passionate about corporate culture are untrustworthy. Those who love their jobs and hate when people interrupt them are trustworthy.

Whenever I see women talking about their career

Many people lack any sense of identity. So they define themselves by what they own, or their job, or politics, etc.

For example, there are people who buy a Harley Davidson motorbike. Then they build their identity around that. They become the Harley guy. They dress as the Harley guy, they talk and walk they way they think the Harley guys should. - You know what I mean. You've seen that personality type.

People with that type of personality have no identity, so they try to build one. Work is the best and most constructive thing they can build their personality around. Yes, they can be annoying to work with at times, but other times you're glad you have someone who puts in the time and effort to be good at their job.

In the end, people like that exist. That personality type will always exist. Be happy that they form their identity around work, and not social justice issues, or some other bullshit.

I love working hard just hate everyone I work with

[–] 3 pts

Hey me too. Iv gotten to where I pretty much hate everyone though. Not just the people I work with

[–] 1 pt

Absolutely one much not hate but extremely dislike everyone equally. Jesus teaches us to teach those in ignorance the glory of christ and the bliss that life can bring about.

I tried believing in god I don’t see it.

Obviously you've never worked in construction. To be a great welder you have to be passionate because it involves heat, getting frequent weld burns, frustrations with equipment, traveling to remote places and being away from home. Do we love the problems and discomfort? No of course not. We love the challenge of overcoming and the pride we feel in a job well done as well as the decent pay. Not everyone is passionate and many quit. Those stick with the trade and are more skillful eventually overcome the problems while making it seem easy to others. I have seen new guys spend an entire shift in frustration while I did the same operation and literally smoked pass them with ease.

I'm hoping you don't share this thought with your auto mechanic/shop,if we aren't passionate about the quality of our work, people die.

[–] 2 pts

What always scared me is that where I was from anyone who was an auto mechanic or a carpenter usually was an alcoholic in high school and was having problems with drugs later in life as well. and these are the only jobs that they could get. To think about it like that, that's scary as fuck. to have a fall down washed up drunk making stairs or a fall down washed up drunk putting brakes on your car.

[–] 1 pt

Your concerns are VERY real,I've let go(no references) 3 mechanics in the last 12.5 months, all for NOT paying attention to detail.

Sometimes I have to take my vehicle to the dealer, and they're the worst offenders. I've called them out in every job they've done due to shoddy workmanship. These bastards got the nerve to charge top dollar for their labor.

I could see that at small shops maybe, but large shops and dealerships have a lot of oversight from foremen and managers, so those people get weeded out eventually. The dealership I work for is small but if there's any kind of comebacks we (techs) get held accountable.

[–] 0 pt

Yeah but it's an uphill battle to try to prove what happened was not something I did. I mean something so simple as screwing the top of my air filter housing back down after they checked the air filter to tell me I needed a new air filter.I mean maybe they thought I was going to authorize the work but still why would I pay the dealership a hundred bucks to do that when I can do it myself. still it was very dangerous of them to assume.

It really depends on the job.

Some jobs are fantastic jobs.

[–] 1 pt

I once interviewed for a job laying network cable. The guy asked me if I saw the job as the pinnacle of my life achievement, my ultimate goal in life and something that I'd do until death. Somebody answered yes to that question and got that job, but it wasn't me.

especially someone who came out of early retirement to start a local chain of pop-up covid testing clinics

I work to support my family, not for the sake of the work. I'm passionate about doing well at my job so I can provide well for my family. Guys who are 169% into their jobs just strictly for the sake of the job are weird.

[–] 2 pts (edited )

Call me weird but then a good job pays for all that other stuff. I've seen a guy who would leave work because the wife was crying on the phone. First off, I never brought a phone to work. Any thing goes wrong while I'm at work can be handled better by police or ambulance and I do have relatives who are available. The guy with the whiny wife did get fired leaving work to much and spending time on his phone. He should have given his wife the foreman's number and shut his phone off. No one ever died from a panic attack. Maybe get her a cat?

I guess the hangup is in how we all interpret "overly" passionate. I love my job, and it's physically brutal and unpleasant sometimes too. I'm thinking about the guys who are into the job for the sake of the job and don't have any sort of life or identity outside of the workplace.

That's being one dimensional. Usually those types are also inflexible in their opinions. I have many outside interests. Sculpting wood, painting, landscaping, making new friends, and reading great books that seriously open my eyes to things I never thought about. Yes, I worked last year for a plumber like this. A good man but sometimes I had to beg him to reconsider stuff when I helped him landscape a backyard. I walked off that job because he wanted me to install drainage for the yard improperly. He's a great plumber but an idiot at landscaping.
