The stuff uncle used to hand out was quite good. We had several people around us that got the stuff and didn't want it, the pasta, or the rice. Mac n cheese with a whole block of cheese and hamburger was delicious and cheap. I still make it today.
I had a roommate who had some and the shit wouldn't melt. It scared me.
We melted it in a double boiler with lots of milk and butter. Yours may have been too old, the stuff will dry out.
Come to think of it, that wasn't official gov cheese. We just called it that cause he bought it with his food stamps. lol
Ah, the dreaded "off-brand" cheese block that makes Velveeta look like a fine French delicacy.
I dunno what it was, but I recall trying to make a grilled cheese in a pan and it wouldn't melt. We moved on to the microwave (for science) and it still didn't melt.
