When the British were giving their colony, India independence, around 1947, the majority of the pop. was hindu and sikh, the next larger group were muslim. The muzzies didn't want to be ruled by the hindus, so many migrated to, or were already living in the areas that what became Pakistan and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
