I told him I had given him money before and that if he had not made it to Bakersfield by now it wasn't going to happen. He turned away and said naw man it wasn't him. It's all scams.

It's so normal it's ubiquitous. When I used to live on the outskirts of Detroit, it was at least once or more a week. Not just money, rides too. I would just say something like "Shit man, I ain't got no damn money.." or "I'm broke as fuck, bro.."

I try to stop only at gas stations with good lighting, look clean, and have a major intersection or are on a toll highway off ramp. Ideally, I only buy gas at Costco.
