1) BLM/Antifa riots are not just in large coastal cities. There are now local Marxist anarchists in towns like Kenosha eager for an excuse to riot, loot and burn. Small businesses are prime targets.
2) The police and fire departments are either unable or unwilling to control rioting mobs. They can herd the rioters from one area to another, but they won't round up or arrest anyone during or after the destruction because it is too politically charged. Therefor any residents, pedestrians or drivers in the riot area are on their own.
3) The best defense against a mob is a gun. It may deter anyone from molesting you or it may be necessary to use it to avoid being beaten to death. Many rioters will have illegally concealed guns, chemical bombs, clubs or skateboards.
