Fair fights only work against inferior or poorly prepared opposition; you'll only survive so many of them. Couple that with the possibility of going to prison if you get "overzealous" and this places the "defender" at a distinct disadvantage. It is perfectly natural to be ultra aggressive in a dangerous situation. It is not human nature to stop attacking on a dime. If someone attacked me with the intention to kill me, I'm probably killing them, even if the "threat is no longer there".
This world is full of idiots, the "good guys" are especially stupid and unreasonable. Pistol vs rifle is a huge disadvantage. You almost can't miss with a rifle at those ranges.
