The origin of organized government comes from the coordination and sharing of water resources
Prior to WW1 your statement about militias briefly existing was true, however the reality of mechanization compels otherwise. Eisenhower said it best in his famous "military-industrial complex" speech:
Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense; we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions
At least he understood the monster he set free. We've spent the past 70 years pretending it's a house cat.
I pull that speech up everytime someone calls the military industrial complex a conspiracy theory. It never changes their minds but it confirms they are not worth my time.
Sharing. Aka armed thugs seizing everything then first doling out large amounts of shared resources to the elites holding keys to power then trickling just enough to the dirty masses to keep them from revolting.
