We've been going to the closest skatepark not quite every day for a while now.

I've been impressed with all of these guys(and about 50% of the girls there).

I've two teenagers, one boy and girl, and a six year old boy.

Every one of them has received personal tips, tricks, my youngest is incredibly charming and I would say 75% or greater of the people who come there have personally helped him with whatever challenge he is at. I'm so impressed with the rate of accomplishment for every one of my kids. It wouldn't happen without the support of the unlikely community.

It has been so encouraging to me to see this. Most of you won't know that I'm a mom. I've spent many years trying to fit into whatever group, from military wives(both enlisted and officer), to mother book clubs, natural mother's groups, cooking, gaming, gardening... basically anything I thought I could be genuine in yet still failed to make any meaningful relationships. I was always seeking community for myself and children as an only child married to an only child, both grandparents for our children absent, and frequent moving due to military. Soccer and jiu jitsu lacked in ways I won't get into here.

This, though, this is real contact with real people who actually care to see each other succeed.

I'm just really happy to see what I'm seeing. It's the first time I've seen groups of people encourage one another, not be engaged or absorbed into whatever tech gadget they have, be active and constantly improving physically.

It's human, without the jewfluence. It's doing, because it's enjoyable, and it's not step on everyone to get ahead, or doing to be part of the system.

It's nice.

That sounds great, but be careful. My skater friends exposed me to drinking, pot and tripping on lsd n shrooms.

Educate your kids about drugs n whatnot.

Yep, I was this innocent kid but they sure thickened my skin. The problem was I stayed being friends with them after and one by one they have been dying from OD or suicide.

The ones that didn't do hard drugs but partied are all doing great now and are tougher people. Most...

Odd? Every other kid I run across has a skateboard. Just like old times!

No need to worry until you wake up to a massive half-pipe in your driveway... hope you all have good health insurance for those boys!

Until it isn’t. Keep an eye on the goings on. As a parent you are ultimately responsible for what happens to them. Don’t let your guard down due to a few feel good kids. Keep your guard up, be responsible. Trust doesn’t exist in the real world. That’s on you.

I used to lay stomach down on a skateboard and push myself with my hands all over the neighborhood. I remember my hands being so bloody and yet it didn’t hurt.

That's all good to hear. I remember hanging out at skate parks and it mostly being a positive environment; kids helping other kids and just being a place to unwind. There will be some negative aspects, a lot have been covered in other comments but it never bothered me. It seemed like the good kids stuck together.

Last Christmas I got a skateboard for my son. I had an old one laying around that I would putt around on every once in a while and he asked for one. It's has his favorite colors and a kitten on it with lasers coming out of his eyes. We ride around together and, as a dad, I live for this kind of father/son bonding.

Helmets are important!

That's so nice!! Wonderful to find a spot in your community you and your kids are all comfortable in. I wish there were more wholesome places like that.

I remember living on a military base when I was a very young child. My mom bought me a skateboard and watched me while I rode it. One day when I was alone a group of black kids stole it from me. She was never able to buy me another one.

You can learn both. Plus you can take your skateboard and smack people in the head with it
