This isn't going to fly with normies. Public school is something they pay taxes for even if they don't have kids. It's a lot of fucking money, too. We're not talking about a couple hundred bucks. We're talking $15,000 - $20,000 per student per year. You can't just defund that because everyone and their grandmother knows the government would eat that up on some other stupid bullshit the next day.
I think a better option would be to argue that instead of defunding public schools, we need total education reform. Right now there are two sets of rules: one for public schools and one for private/charter schools. This hurts competition, which hurts outcomes. We need one set of rules for ALL schools and then give parents the money that would go to school districts. Let the parents choose which school gets their money. That will end shitty education once and for all.
In the future we as states can have a conversation about transitioning from that system into one that just stops taxing people for education and lets them keep that money so they can use it for the school of their choice.
