I live in far western North Carolina. The remnants of Ida brought us about 6 inches of rain over 30 hours. At midnight, the biggest tree on my five acres came down on my house. No outside lights here on the mountain, but using a flashlight, it looks pretty bad. Just contacted the insurance company. Daylight will reveal all.

Been trying for over a month to get the local tree guy to take down that one tree. I love it up here, but the fucking hillbillies are pretty damn useless for getting anything done.

Why allow this? It's not like the tree came out of nowhere.

Are there any other trees that, if they fell, could land on your house?

If so, why not fix that?

Trees are vicious and violent dumbass. I cut down a tree one time and they stormed my home with sawed offs and killed my dog right in front of me. You don’t just go around starting shit with trees

[–] 1 pt

Can confirm. Them bastards are ruthless. Have you not seen lord of the rings?!

[–] 5 pts

Seen it? This motherfucker lived it.

That ain't shit, have you seen Evil Dead?!?!?!?

It started to lean about 2 months ago. We called our 'dependable' tree guy but he was too busy to get out here. We want the insurance adjuster out here before clean up so they can bring us a higher damage claim. Big trees are intimidating.

Keep in mind, I've been here for five years. We've removed about thirty trees already. This whopper was a live tree back in the tree line, but only when we saw it starting to lean did we really get concerned.

On the bright side, the roof is not caved in and the normal $500 fee to remove this whopper will be paid in the settlement. Wife and I uninjured.

500 is a bargain. I have about 2 dozen trees that have grown around 80-90 feet that I want gone. The cheapest guy I can get to do it wants 3 grand...per tree. I've fell a handful of trees before. None taller than 30 feet and I've seen them "spin" when being taken down (live) (even with wedges)...from experienced teams.

Monsterous trees are something I won't deal with.

What I did was had my company drop off a 80' lift for the 50' honey locust tree that split after our storm. I started with the small branches at the top and worked my way down into manageable chunks. Was it a slow process? Yeah, took me about a week. But, I didn't have to worry about the tree spinning and causing more damage, and I saved a ton of money.

Around here it's $1000. When they are really big, we just have them do it. Husband knocked down 5 last weekend and we have another 5 to knock down. He has a lot of experience. But the 2 giant pines we are hiring out.

Hillbilly tree service guys climb, taking off every branch all the way up. Then they put a rope around the tree and tie it off to a tree in the direction they want it to fall. Cool to watch. I get then to just drop it in the woods. Usual price is $150 each, but not this big bastard.

I just gave my brother and his friend less $$$ than the bids I got to remove ours under the table and pocketed the $2000.

You are living right. Somewhere out there is an insurance company jew who thinks he cheated you.

[–] 1 pt

So no trees for 100 feet around the house? LOL.

[–] 0 pt

No 100' trees

[–] 0 pt

OK, so no trees for 50 feet?

I do project managing and estimating. I have spent the last year cleaning up after an inland hurricane. My biggest piece of advice is seal up your house temporarily, because the first quote the insurance company gives is a fucking joke. They gave me $13k to begin with, I did an estimate on my house and come up with $80k. They eventually met my number. It is on you to secure your property however. Also, you'll get fucked on the cost of the tree removal. Take 1000 pictures and videos, then wait until your initial estimate and clean up the tree yourself. Just keep in mind, the insurance company has to meet LKQ which means like, kind and quality. Also, they will want to replace any shingles that are damaged, and just those. Keep in mind, when you replace 1 shingle, you will need to take off the surrounding shingles to do it properly. You'll also want to inspect the substrate where the tree hit for damage and cracked trusses/rafters - depending on the age of your home. Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions.

Great suggestions! The voice of experience is mighty welcome.

My delinquent tree guy came over when h got the news. He took care of it at no cost to me; billing insurance. Sweet! The roof is about 4 years old and metal we had put over the older shingle roof. Was not punctured ,but 4 metal panels will need to be replaced due to scratches and dents.

All my life, I sued insurance companies for auto collisions and scored big every time. Now, I just want to break even. Must be dementia in my old age.

As soon as i bought my house i hired a guy to come in and fell every big ass tree that could have fallen on it. 20 damn trees. Thousand bucks well spent.

[–] 0 pt

It's a good investment. Some will even lower the price a good bit if you let them keep the wood.

[–] 1 pt

Had a couple of guys clear a property for free just to keep the wood. After that, we just had to deal with the stumps.

One time I tried cutting a tree down on my property and it said it was a made tree. Next thing I knew my house was vandalised and Tony Soprano slapped me in front of my wife and told me to "wise up".

Thanks, I needed a chuckle.

Please have a better day than I will.

[–] 1 pt

Don't worry bro, everything will be alright in the end. Sometimes it's just TMS.

Tree Menstrual Syndrome is a problem for lots of flora.

Yes, thank you. Tree cut and removed at no personal cost. Insurance to cover all costs.

[–] 2 pts

Glad you're alright OP. That's some scary stuff. How big was the tree?

Too big to reach around. Up by the roots. Figure about a $20-30k settlement coming.

[–] 0 pt

If you're comfortable sending photos, we can probably double that. Remember, the way the house is put together and depending how/where the tree fell, it can easily move the wall. I've seen cracks appear on the opposite side of the house, as the top plates in the wall shifted and pushed everything over 1/8".

Well, much has happened. The tree guy came out and cut up and removed the tree. Charged us nothing but filing a claim with our homeowner insurance. Oddly, the roof is not punctured, so the drywall is untouched. We have a $500 deductible but, ahem, we will get that back by fudging the numbers. So, yay!

[–] 2 pts

Sorry to hear that. I hope you get a nice settlement. What kind of tree was it?

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

60 year old pine tree. It's huge. Not even near the house, but when it came down, the top quarter of it covers the end of the house front to back. Chimney wrecked too. Ugh.

[–] 0 pt

Wow, that's scary. I have about 4 of them like that on my property but mine are within distance of my house if they fall because they are so tall. I've walked around them and the roots look solid. Was there any warning that it could come down?

It started leaning 2 months ago. We called our tree guy, but of course he was too busy elsewhere. When I heard the terrible sound at midnight, I knew what it must be and ducked under a desk. It fell when it did after 30 hours of steady heavy rains from Ida.

[–] 2 pts

I've got a cabin with so many trees around it that I'm pretty much doomed. When I read stuff like this makes me think I'm just gonna have to up and move it to a clearer area.

Good luck OP, hopefully insurance does it's job. I have relatives whose house burned down and they got a nice hotel stay for awhile.

I've taken out about 30 trees in 4 years. I did the smaller ones and hired out the big ones to be laid back into the forest.

Insurance will cover the damages, which are smaller than I feared. I'm on 5 acres with trees on all sides. No neighbors, less than 10 niggers in the whole county. In scenic mountains. I'm home.

[–] 1 pt

Glad to hear. I'm in a similar place, no mountains just big hills. There used to be NO niggers here but I've started seeing a few. Hopefully they're just truckers passing through.

I've cut down some big trees mainly for more sun to the solar panels. I just have to keep on eye on some close ones. I would need pros with big machinery, I can't cut them myself without them falling the wrong way. It's so heavily wooded in spring and summer you could be 50 yards away and not see my place, which I like.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

Had this happen in 2014 during a wind storm. I had just walked outside to look at the trees. One started to fall and I ran maybe 12 feet before it crashed onto the house, broke off the top of the tree that landed where I had been standing. Lucky to be breathing. FYI we decided to do some of the work ourselves and saved a lot of money.

Glad you are okay! I slightly injured my knee from diving under the desk as the tree hit the roof. No biggie.

But there's gotta be a lesson in our two situations. Let's both move to the big city and live in public housing. No problems with trees! Cheap rent. Can there possibly be a downside to this plan???

[–] 2 pts

Great. Now instead of picking fresh asses you'll have to buy them at the store.

Hey, that's good!

I obviously grow asses here on my land, but dammit, they're big ones. Thanks for the tip!

[–] 2 pts

Now you got a lot of wood, sell it and buy a new house.

It's pine. Nobody wants that stuff. It's now cut up and tossed into the trees.

House sustained way less damage than I'd feared. I'm gonna be okay. Thanks!

That sucks man. Hopefully your insurance company doesn't kike you out

Insurance will cover everything. $500 deductible, but this is the second tree to hit the roof in 4 years. Last of the big trees, so all is better.
