The world just tried to eliminate the cold virus. This is Mao "kill-all-sparrows-to-stop-them-eating-grains" and "let's-melt-shovels-and-hoes-and-all-metal-farm-implements-for-industrial-metal" (which only produced pig iron) levels of stupidity.

If the world came up with a millenial prize to eliminate the cold virus with no limitations on strategies to do achieve it, what would scientists and politicians do?

Any sane scientist would say it's impossible as the virus has animal hosts and circulates in children and comes in waves each season from international travel between northern and southern hemisphere. So they would not even attempt the idea as you cannot stop the transmission of the virus, let alone contact trace it. Not to mention that all attempts to create a cold virus vaccine haven't worked to date.

But if Mao Zedong were alive and be given the challenge, what do you think Mao would do?

I think Mao will:

Make people put on masks. This makes sense as the mask will "catch the breath".
Stop people from talking to each. The cold virus lingers in aerosol, so stopping people from spraying the virus amongst each other face to face makes sense.
Stop people from congregating in groups. This is just the logical next step to stopping the formation of aerosol clouds.
Stop travel between cities. Then between states. Then between nations. The next logical, higher/est level strategy from face to face, one on one interaction.
Kill all animals that may carry the virus such as domestic dogs and cats and mink and any other animal that have interaction with people.
Test everybody for cold virus and make them isolate if they are infected. No actually scratch this, just isolate everybody.
Ask any and every pharmaceutical company to create a vaccine and just inject everybody with it. Mao will power through it. Something will "eventually work". If it doesn't and it causes injuries, meh. Those injuries are the collateral damage for "the greater good". We'll keep trying and power through it. Something will eventually stick.
While we're at it, why not make a cold virus vaccine for animals too? It's coming. Your house pet will now need to be registered and given the 2 dose jab and boosters too.
If people resist this millenial plan, they will be bribed, coerced, beaten, and eventaully murdered if they don't follow.
If it doesn't work, just keep powering through it.
