A Muslim wanted to cross a river, but it was the season of flooding and due to his repressive religious laws, he had never learned how to swim.

A Jew who lived by the river saw the Muslim and said, "I am a fine swimmer. will carry you across the river on my back."

"Why would you do that?" the Muslim asked in surprise. "Muslims and Jews have always been enemies."

"I believe in the brotherhood of all men," the Jew replied. "In any case, we worship the same God."

Thanking the Jew, the Muslim climbed onto the Jew's back, and the Jew set out across the river. Halfway there, the Jew dumped the Muslim into the deep, swift current and watched him drown.

Then the Jew swam back to the bank of the river to wait for the next Muslim.

Revised ending.

"Why would you do that?" the muslim asked in surprise. "muslims and jews have always been enemies."

"How many shekels do you have," the jew asked.

"I have 20 shekels." the muslim replied.

"Thats wonderful," said the jew. "The price for my carrying you across will only be a measly one shekel my friend."

"That sounds very reasonable," said the muslim. "It's a deal."

Thanking the jew, the muslim climbed onto the jew's back, and the jew set out across the river. Halfway there, the jew became agitated, showing signs of distress.

Becoming concerned for his life, the muslim asked, "What is wrong? The water here is very deep and the current is swift."

"It must be the weight of all of the nineteen shekels in your pockets, my friend," said the jew "If you would but give me eighteen of them, it would lighten your load, and make the trip easier for us."

And so the muslim gave the jew eighteen of his remaining shekels, and thusly the muslim was lightened, and the jew was fortified, and they finished crossing the river in safety.

"Now I am wet and cold." said the muslim.

"Ah, my friend, it just so happens that my brother has a hut over yonder, with a fire going. And for the price of one measly shekel..."

And then the jew swam back to the opposite bank of the river to wait for the next muslim.
