It solves the problem for the one that makes the decision. But I agree, it's never a viable solution.

That's not so obvious. As far as I know, virtually no spiritual traditions approve of it. (Yes, there is a Buddhist section, where monks poison themselves, but some things are just fucked up.) I think most, if not all, Christians view it as a sin.
