The problem with apps is that they're black boxes. You don't know what they're doing, and have no real possibility of knowing what they're doing. Is it loaded all the time? Is it phoning home. What data is it collecting from my phone?
We've already seen apps from places like Target and Walmart used to track shoppers inside stores. Who knows what the fuck else they're doing.
90% of everything their wonderful app does can be done from their web site using the browser of your choice.

Now do operating systems, communication chips, or processors.
Windows has always keylogged you AND sent off your keylogs.
Android, Apple, Google, Microsoft and even many Linux distros come with command and control exploits preloaded.
Processors and chips are required to have backdoor to allow command and control access.
Big Data knows more about you than you do and maintains very detailed records about you.
They are estimating what year you will die and what medications they can sell you along the way.
They are estimating what your political affiliations are so they can steer you away.
They are tricking you into spending money in many stupid ways.
I'm curious to see when we will see the emergence of "malware" specifically designed to poison the data they collect.

Probably true, but considering how shitty a job they've done of it with me, I'm curious what component of one's psyche makes one strongly resistant to the bullshit.

Now do VPN's
You mean "tell them that you're of special interest and you want to pay to be monitored more closely" services? Though, the apparently popularity of them might water down this pool.

Kill yourself.
Yep. No need to add layers. It would be like saying, "Oh, since there's already a nail in my tire let me slash the sidewall."
The big boys who are behind those are far more a threat than some shitty app developer.
They don't need to track you in stores if you check out using a credit card or phone number.
Credit cards and phone numbers don't let them map where you walk in the store, how long you stand in each aisle, in front of what products you spend the most time, etc.
Or Walmart with a ton of camera's and a facial recognition program. My scummy cousin "not blood thankfully" shop lifted there and the camera's have the security headed to escort him out the second he enters and he doesn't get 10 ft. Really I cannot blame them either, that banned for life it what he deserves for shoplifting. I imagine he's in jail again since it's been over a year since I've heard about him.
