The movement was always based on jealousy. But it was jealousy over a non-existent fantasy. They wanted what they perceived men in their own social circles to have. But except for a very few in the “leisure” class, living off family fortunes and doing nothing, most wealthy men in 1800s America still worked their asses off to get there.
