In recent years I hear conservatives say — I think I first heard it from Crowder — that, in a self-defense situation, the attacker doesn't "deserve to die," but instead "forfeits their right to live."

I wouldn't call it absurd to claim that you deserve to die if you threaten somebody else's like, but I thought of a better version of "forfeit their right to live" - "earned their death."

With "forfeit their right to live," there's not enough emphasis on the killing part; it unnecessarily tip-toes around it. No, if somebody threatens my life or the life of my loved ones, them dying is part of the process and it deserves more attention. Therefore, it can be said that the attacker "earned their death." It doesn't go "over the line" like "deserve to die" does for some people, but it's more accurate than "forfeit your right to live."
