My only concern is heating without electricity.
Same. Setting up a wood heater has been on the backburner of things to do for a while now.
I was considering a generator that I could put outside, crack the sliding glass door or window for the cables, insulate the rest of the space with blankets, and use portable electric heaters... but I'm concerned with the noise they would make. You don't want cold and starving neighbors to know you're getting by, then I'd have to use up all my ammo!
I think the wood heater is the best bet for heating. Abundant fuel, low-noise operation, can cook food, boil water, etc. But you have to set it up right, surround its area in non-flammables, cut holes in your ceiling/roof, and so on.
I don't think you would need to cut holes, if you set it up in the basement and set the piping to go out the dryer vent...
