I was thinking of this earlier today and realized I've never actually spoken about this before. I do see the sarcastic moniker of "God's Chosen People" from time to time. I thought I might elaborate what that actually means and why it makes perfect sense. There are a lot of Jews who are quite pretentious about this title, to be sure. But through a biblical lens, God actually choose them specifically because they were quite um..."unpalatable". It's not that they are THE BEST race, but actually the exact opposite. This makes sense through Christian ideology, where God selects fishermen, tax collectors, prostitutes, thieves, and even murderers to exemplify the power of Christ. To show us all how salvation is extended to the dregs of society, and the transformative power of God shines brightest in even the worst individuals. and this makes sense when you read the rest of the Bible with this in mind as well. Think about the liberation from Egypt. Directly after Moses parted the red sea, saved them from captivity, and killed their enemies, what did the Jews do? Became irritable that Moses brought them out in the middle of the desert "for nothing". God grants them a geyser of water to placate them. Immediately afterwards, what do they do? "What, that's it? No meat? Come on God what gives?". Could you imagine being in that situation where you just witnessed a plethora of jaw dropping miracles, and this is how you behave? And then after all of this they build a golden idol and start worshipping it??? If most of us experienced what they did we would be in awe, reverence, and disbelief the entire time. I mean, all throughout the Bible, the MAJORITY of the time, the Jews are not acting heroically and valiantly. It's not portrayed as such either, despite being written by Jews. It's properly seen as unpalatable and evil. And this is exactly why God chose them. Not because of their brilliance, but their iniquity and shortcomings. Because they are the lowest and the most hated on the planet. It's not a term that's synonymous with stainless, immaculate perfection. Just thought I would share that in case some find the background interesting.
