Crowds are dumb. The internet essentially turns a population into a crowd, especially when you have Twitter acting as a sort of virtual stage from which the President delivers his spicy talk.
I remember reading that once a crowd reaches a certain size, the average IQ of the crowd drops to that of a 7 year old child. This is why mobs of people are so easy to manipulate. I'll try to find the source for that.
Never underestimate stupid in a crowd

Depends on the mental strength of the leaders. If they are easily swayed by money and power expect the IQ of the crowd to lower.
Yeah, mass psychosis or mob rule is definitely a thing. I look at the riots when people's teams win a sportsball championship. I think the majority of these people would be reasonable in 1 on 1 interaction, but the next thing you know your insurance adjuster is chucking cinder blocks at some poor bastard wearing the wrong color jersey. People are fucking crazy in mobs.
