There's also a type of course emerging where the lectures are optional, if you know the material you can skip straight to the exam and move on to the next class. They're typically online and aimed at mature students.
I actually tested out of all my first year classes EXCEPT the mandatory Microsoft Office course which I failed the opt out test because I failed the Word portion but passed the Excel Access and IE portions. Like it was some bullshit about making flyers for the office bulletin board and shit. It's been over 20 years and I still can't believe how stupid that was. I was taki g C and VB courses with sophomores and juniors and had to learn how to be a secretary.
A lot of basic computer courses are basically manuals for microsoft products. It's crazy.
This was also the heifht of the internet boom where Microsoft was the only thing supported. I worked in the support desk office if the college and data entry at the courthouse in the middle of campus.
