Masks have the same effect internet anonymity has on people's civility toward one another. When people hide half of their faces it masks expression, emotion, etc. It makes physical interactions more impersonal, similar to online interactions.

me neither, and the child is good looking and totally outgoing too, so I was just shocked. probably has smth to do with self-image, who knows, but I think OP got that correct.
