Wouldn't it have been worth it to get a lawyer to fight it? Unless of course it's not possible to have them pay your lawyers fees when they lose. I don't really know much about how the IRS works. All I know is that taxation is theft.

You could but the process gets even more complicated. Based off the complexity, i would have paid more in legal fees to fight the issue, than to just accept my fate. And the IRS heavily condones this, by making you sign additional forms for every single tax year, and issue. So a small issue could take years to pan out, which means even more fees.

What a joke. I assume the penalty / fee they came up with is based on the amount they're trying to tax you on? Or do they just hand out tens of thousands of dollars in fines to whomever they please?

I know it's not really feasible, but I would have seriously considered just fucking off out of the country over something like that. At least some eastern countries have faster internet than the west.

They use proportional fining. If you "gained" tax free money to the tune of 100,000, the fine will be calculated based on it hurting you, but not enough you cant pay it. So they'll come back and say, you have to pay 50,000 in fining. And i asked, the chances of them accepting an appeal, is zero. So realistically, it's much closer to hand out tens of thousands in fines and see what happens.
