I believe superhuman abilities are real, rare, and those with them are so freaked out about the greater powers that destroyed past human civilizations, those with such abilities work to undermine human advancement.

Synesthesia savants utilize the limbic system to expand perception and interaction with reality. In some cases this appears to hack the consciousness\subconsciousness divide in unpredictible ways and simultaneously activate more brain regions dedicated to particular tasks. These are some of the proverbial "superhuman" or extreme statistical outliers referenced above.
