Sodium bicarbonate lowers the acid in your gut, which doesn’t help you properly digest the food. And there are other problems associated with using baking soda, mostly related to alkalizing the system.

My wife taught me that one needs to increase the acid levels of the gut to defeat heartburn. I thought this sounded ridiculous until actually trying it. So about two tablespoons (a shot) of apple cider vinegar does the trick pretty quick. And she also taught me to shake it up to get the mother mixed into the liquid.

My grandpa used apple cider vinegar pretty much his whole life, but for some reason I haven't taken up the habit. I've heard good things about it, and he made it to 81 before throat cancer got him...he also drank heavily and smoked a pipe for most of his life. I know that the baking soda idea isn't the best one I've had, but when I wake up with heartburn, nothing else gets rid of it quicker. I think I'll try the vinegar thing. Thanks man.
