When I was a child, I always thought the biggest threat to our existence was some celestial phenomenon, but instead it seems we'll largely just kill ourselves.

If you look at English and European literature in the 17th century, you will be amazed at how complex the sentence structure is compared to what we use today. The King James Bible is an example. My own feeling is that human intelligence reached its highest development in Europe during this period, and we have been in decline ever since.
