I really thought we would never have an ideological purge in the US. I thought we had learnt from the past, from the Holodomor and Mao and Pol Pot. But now that I think about it, I bet all those people who got purged also thought they had learned from the past.

Even though I think McCarthy was mostly correct, he did do an ideological purge of sorts.

I thought we had learnt from the past, from the Holodomor and Mao and Pol Pot.

I never learned about the Holodomor in school and I doubt others have so it's hard to learn from that. I understand what you mean though.
