It is. They literally have taught hieroglyphics instead for like 30 years. Kids learn to recognize whole syllabic forms, not phonetics. Most "literate" people don't actually ingest information.

Most people read at the (white) 3rd grader level already, and with schools permanently shut down, we'll soon have a generation of HS "graduates" who can't even do that.
