Aether is built and run by an absolutely liberal/leftist/globalist guy - but it is a good idea, and I am actually wondering if he may be sufficiently decent and smart to actually understand the value of free speech... beyond creating a platform for it ;-)
Besides that you have Tor - which works, despite being created by no less then US military/government (no way they left a backdoor there!!)
Then you have I2P which is, well, so far not important enough to really try and compromise it. And Freenet which, though not important either, was already infected by Canadian cops.
I mean... there are alternatives, and there will be many more, the more pressure newborn totalitarian globalist government would apply to the general population.
