1) Include a commonly used feature on social media sites. 2) Punish users who use that feature. 3) ?? 4) Profit?

Copied from the searchvoat forum about Voat alternatives:

"POAL was pretty bad, they didn't understand the common useage of the downvote button. I asked their Admin about that policy, and they told me that I could thumb-down posts and I would be ok as long as I wasn't predatory and went after specific users. The next think I know, I went from a positive 60 rating, to negative 100+. They claim "Say what you want" then censor you into oblivion! I don't need them! They can run their little comfort blanket circle jerk echo chamber without me!"

You must admit, though. We need it 10% of the time that we did on voat.

Honestly, I don't see any difference in the need. All I know is that people are scared to use a button that's offered to them, and it pisses off the ones that use it and then get nuked. It's a just a needless and constant source of frustration. If the button is so bad, then get rid of it -- there's actually a proper "report" button now (that, bizarrely, you can't even see unless you're high enough level). Do you actually want people to use the button on occasion? Ok, then limit how many times you can use it a day. Three should suffice.

I miss seeing at a glance where disagreement occurred. On Voat, it would help highlight popular posts that were bullshit. Users upvote things they agree with mindlessly, but a few downvotes was an easy signifiar that the post was possibly bullshit and worth a critical look. Of course you'd get the occasional mass downvoting if it went against the grain, but I could live with that. You expressed an unpopular opinion, it shows up as unpopular. Big deal. Just don't ding the user who got downvoted in functionality for it.
