Then the down vote is as well.

Change the downvote policy or quit calling yourself a free speech site.

Policed speech is never free.

I use it to voice my approval.

Others may use it however they want.

Point is, a POLICY, by definition, polices speech.

Thus POAL is not free speech.

I see your point. The only counter to it I have is that no site is 100% free speech, in the sense that there are no limits to what can be posted. By participating here we are consenting to the rules. If we don't like it we can post elsewhere or lobby to change the rules.

I got sick of much of the behavior at Voat (both by the admins and a good chunk of the members) so I moved on. Phuks was too stifling for me so I settled here, and I feel like I made the right choice.

Sounds fine to me.

Thank you for seeing my point.

I understand about rules. What I don't like is open hypocrisy when they say it's free but limit how I use a particular button.

To quote the User Guide:

At Poal, we believe the down vote is not a "I disagree button".

We'd rather engage in a counter argument with the post/comment we disagree with, and use down votes for spam (you can report to admins) and off topic trolls.

The algorithm that the mods have put in place is to prevent wanton abuse of the down vote, not the occasional "this is a shit post" down vote and move on. It was a tough thing for all of us to grow accustomed to but I'd go so far as to say that the majority of the community would agree that doing it this way promotes a more open discussion.

And yes, I will drop a DV on a troll or an asshole every now and then.
