The limits could be increased if needed - most uploads are less than 6mb at the moment but there's kind of an incentive to register.
Spam from guest accounts is a problem for this kind of site, and it just feels right to put some kind of limit on it.

Everything is optional except username & email. You could choose to put your name,age,location etc.. but most people don't, and that's fine.
