Been wondering why there's been so much internet censorship lately? Gotta keep this on the hush-hush.

The Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies Act (EARN IT Act) would force technology companies to kill encryption programs that prevent hackers, law enforcement officers and many others from accessing private online communication systems.

Need reason to be sketched out?

They're running the typical "Think of the Children" gambit

In a press release from March 5th, the senators claim the bill is meant to "encourage the tech industry to take online child sexual exploitation seriously."

And this is a PROBLEM. They need to shut us down. If the government/corporations cannot monitor and control what we say, they cannot control us. and this IS a problem for them. # Spread the word. People need to know about this campaign. They win by keeping us in the dark. # This is NOT a partisan issue! Both democrats AND republicans are pushing for this bill. Do not pretend there's some "red vs blue" situation here. It's an us (the citizenry) vs them (government/corps) siutation. ### Lindsey Graham and Dianne Feinstein working together? Looks like they've found some common ground. -------------------------------- # Meaningful Commentary by Poaler's ["EARN IT" act to do to Tor what Germany did to JonDonym - @britac](https://poal.co/s/TellPoal/184568/4afddffc-8c43-4ea6-8a22-e55ee57b4413#cmnts) ["EARN IT" act to ruin online banking? - @citizenaspirant](https://poal.co/s/TellPoal/184568/54e46edf-109a-45a9-a45e-3cb51b1afe2d#cmnts)

Anyone remember JAP or JonDonym? It was Tor before Tor, but they had only a few proxies. Then the German government made them add a backdoor so that if (((they))) wanted they could find the originating address.

I bet this new "law" will make a similar demand for Tor and other networks.

Here is some text on JAP from wikipedia:

In July 2003, the German BKA[8][9] obtained a warrant to force the Dresden Mix operators to log access to a specific web address, which was hosting child pornography. AN.ON then decided to introduce a crime detection function in the server software in order to make this possible. The feature was made transparent by publishing the changed source code on August 18, 2003, and subsequently criticized by many users. For the Dresden Mix, the feature continues to be part of their software until today. Tracing activities back in the past is still technically not possible for the operators, but anonymity now extends only to the timepoint that a surveillance court order is issued.[10] It was pointed out though that the new feature was covered by the AN.ON threat model and not a security leak by itself.
