My wife's family fled civil war in their home country. They literally left with just their passports and the clothes on their backs. While they waited for a country to accept them they (2 adults and 4 kids) lived in a one room shed on the property of a distant relation and did odd jobs for food. My wife and her sister, both still in their teens, had 2 jobs each on the second day they arrived in their new country. Not only were they actual refuges but the govt. didn't give them a penny to help them adjust in their new home. By the time their father retired he owned clear a nice acreage outside of town.
