In the book there was three musketeers, and there was a 4th guy a part of the group who was black. The author was black, and it is thought the black tag along character was the author writing himself into the story. Yes I originally heard this on Django unchained, and then Google it for confirmation. I'm not a scholor and I've never read the book.
