On a social level in the 60's the push to be more sexually open (which was tbh welcomed by both sexes) initiated the downfall of the family unit. And every social ill has rippled down from that period, because each generation amplifies the chaos and damage of the preceding one
That's why muslim societies have remained stable over centuries whilst still being backward in almost every other way. The Sodom and Gomorrah story might be made up, but I'd imagine people at the time were aware of similar changes in their history and this was a way of warning future generations of what happens when you make apparently minor changes to moral values.
There is a duality to humans, we always create equal numbers of conservative and liberal thinkers, and life is only stable when these groups remain equal. Somehow the destruction of family has created too many liberals, and this is the whirlwind that follows
