I'm staying in a Motel 6 for a vacation and it's being run into the ground and I was checked in by an Indian. I'm leaving in the morning but have a little time to goof off on the crappy wifi. I decided to see if this Motel 6 is owned by an Indian since it feels like it with the way the "maintenance" is non-existent. Motel 6 was bought by OYO an Indian run company...sigh.

Indian Americans own approximately 60% of hotels in the U.S., representing over 34,000 properties. Apparently, most of them are Patels.

When I was a kid (1980s) my parents owned a 14 room motel and my mom said they made money. Not great money, but were more than breaking even. They ended up having to sell it because my dad did something stupid (as usual) and had to run from loan sharks. She said the only people interested in buying were Indians, so Indians bought it. We had motel friends on the other side of town who ended up selling theirs a few years later - also to Indians. This was in rural North Carolina. My parents had never even seen an Indian before.

I wish there was a way to know who is running a motel/hotel before renting a room.

Usually you can smell curry as so as you walk in the door.

Yeah, but most of the time I'm having to book from where I live, so physically checking out the motel isn't practical. I wish people could just come out and say it in the reviews.

My bf and I were joking about buying a motel and just plain discriminating and seeing how long we could get away with it. Only rent to people that aren't gonna trash the place, charge a reasonable amount during big events, and keep it nice and clean. Probably couldn't get away with it for long, though. Plus with the cost of utilities I doubt a small motel could keep itself in business.

It wouldn't be bad to own one if, and a lot of motels have, owner housing as part of the property. You could do a full reno on a beat up one, make it cute and fancy, maybe tied to a theme, charge enough to keep the low lifes out.

That's essentially what my parents did (minus the theming). I just don't know that it's really all that practical in this day and age, though. Plus, NM is definitely on the no-move list. Their gun laws are insane.

But yeah, if I was younger, I might consider it. In a state that I liked better.

U can sometimes tell based off reviews. You have to be really careful now as even hotel names that you associate with a quality stay have fallen victim to this.

They are now buying entire chains. It's nuts. I picked Super 8 for next year but it looks Indian owned as well. I don't think any of the hotels aren't in Roswell. Freaking sucks. I don't want to give them any money.
