I don't think that's a terrible analogy. Actually, that's pretty good. I think it is a social club, to the extent that I don't have a life so it's fun to pop online and see your friends. In the same way that every high school has some asshole kid that tries to get all of the other kids to smoke, I think that conformity is certainly an element.
I'd argue that most of us know that we're losers, so we pick on people who are worse than us (pizzagate clowns and qtards are pretty bad) and to some extent this provides us with raison d'être.
I don't feel that there is much method to our madness and we're not sophisticated people. I can think of a couple of our members who probably are unable to balance their checkbooks.
