Looks like under 160 characters will go through as SMS, and larger will go as MMS if available.

Just broke my phone and looked for alternatives to inform important contacts. Don't know if it works yet, but my email wasn't rejected, so I am optimistic.

I wanted one of those! But I had an older one with the physical keyboard, and the ball for scrolling. I can't even remember the model name.
