Its why the poor had tans and were muscled and lean while the rich were pasty and fat. It was looked down upon to have a tan or be in shape as it implied you were too poor and had to toil outside to make ends meet. Now, as with most things, the opposite is true: we spend luxurious amounts of money to look as though we toil in the fields all day and the poor look as though they sit indoors and eat to their heart's content.
