There comes a time where you have to follow through with your convictions, even if it means your own end. Backing down under threats of violence like that really does more lasting damage than you can imagine to your cause. I always ask people who are intelligent but also indolent; what good is knowledge without actions to back it up?

I don't know the details about this specific case yet, but I do understand why people will run back to their private lives if given the chance. It just seems like doing so is much worse for your soul than finishing what you started.

The text is slightly wrong. He didn't back down. Nothing could shut him up; they tried everything. What happened in the end was they managed to replace his bishop, who had been mostly supportive, to one who was corrupt and forbid him from continuing his public work. Like any good priest, he had no choice but to follow orders, even when he knew the orders were wrong. That's how the Catholic Church works.

Yep. Father Coughlin and Huey Long would have been a populist Mega Powers. Huey was murdered after declaring he would run against fdr in '36. Coughlin's publications are also where Francis Parker Yockey did some early writing.
