You can make anyone believe anything that way. You spend enough cash and people will sing your tune, that's how advertising works. Usually people have a price, because media is dependent on money, they bend over and promote the advertiser's product. What happens when people catch on though? Who does it hurt? Most people simply go about their day, there's no earth shattering revelation or propensity to do things differently. "Oh we're being lied to and screwed over again?
