I put this in /s/streamingbut was conflicted on it. It could have gone in a few other places but I guess this one technically makes sense. I have used plex for a long time and bought a "lifetime" pass when it was "cheap".

It's nice to be able to easily share with friends and family that are kind of dumb with computers and they can stream from my library. There are plenty of better systems if you are just using it for yourself or are willing to be tech support for people that have a hard time with a regular tv remote.

From the post: Streaming service provider Plex announced Wednesday its first price increase in a decade for its premium Plex Pass subscription, raising monthly rates to $6.99 from $4.99, yearly subscriptions to $69.99 from $39.99, and lifetime access to $249.99 from $119.99, effective April 29. The company is also making remote playback of personal media a paid feature, introducing a Remote Watch Pass subscription at $1.99 monthly or $19.99 annually for users who don't need full Plex Pass features, and removing its one-time mobile activation fee.

Plex Server operator here.

I’ve been a Plex customer for about a decade. I bought a lifetime subscription on a Black Friday about seven years ago and never looked back.

The service has been nice for hosting content nobody will air (Song of the South, Europa, Hitler speeches) so I can listen from anywhere on my phone. I also use it for normie stuff, like old lost TV shows, audiobooks, radio shows and even classic movies.

This release is worded so strangely that I wouldn’t be surprised if the worst happened and they started charging my external users to watch my stuff.

Also, a recent update broke their encoder and I was forced to do a rollback, so I’m guessing the pajeets have reached critical mass inside the organization.

Either way, I’m not paying for anything else, so they can suck it.

No, there is a updated terms list that says that people (external users) won't be charged anything else. I can't remember where I saw it but it looks like they are not changing that.

What do they stream/carry? Never heard of em

Self hosted media library. I guess they do have their own streaming stuff now that is ad supported but I never use it.

Nothing. All they do is handle external authentication for your own media that you have to provide. I guess that's needed for people off your network to access it via smart TVs and the like? I've never used as I never really saw the point but it's pretty popular.
